Research

The Institute aims to encourage research into sculpture both within its walls and without. We see ourselves as an ‘open house’ where ideas can take shape. Acting as a hub we help to develop a network of people with a particular interest in sculpture - stimulating debate and highlighting concerns in sculpture studies, as well as seeking to integrate the subject area with other disciplines.
The research programme is central to activities within the Institute, sparking ideas for exhibitions, generating events and ensuring we make the best use of the sculpture, library and archive collections. Regular in-house events include the thrice-yearly Wednesday evening talks series' which accompany gallery exhibitions, and a wide variety of symposia. Click on events for further details.
As recognised experts in the field of sculpture we collaborate in external research projects and regularly take part in external events in order to engage with current sculptural debate. To explore further the links between the Institute and external bodies click on research collaborations.
The research department runs the Institute's residential fellowship programme and has strong links with the University of Leeds' School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies, as well as having established relationships with academic departments around the UK. The research programme develops and co-ordinates HMI publications. To find out more about these areas go to Internships, Fellowships, the Essay Prize and the Bookshop link.
